Local SEO cost
Last updated . Figures are approximate and change with the market, so check current prices before you decide.
Local SEO is the work of showing up when someone searches for a business like yours nearby: in the map results, in "near me" searches and in searches with a town name. The cost depends on whether you do it yourself, hire a freelancer or pay an agency retainer. This guide shows the published price ranges, what a monthly fee should include, how much of the work you can do for free and which promises should make you walk away. Market figures come from agency guides, which sell the service they describe, so use them as rough benchmarks.
Local SEO price ranges in 2026
| Option | Typical cost | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY | $0 plus your time | A free Google Business Profile, reviews, listings you manage yourself | |
| One-off project | $500 to $5,000 | A setup or clean-up, no ongoing work | SEO.com |
| Hourly consultant | $75 to $200 an hour | Advice or specific fixes | SEO.com |
| Monthly retainer, micro business (1 to 10 staff) | $100 to $500 a month | Survey-reported spend | SEO.com |
| Monthly agency retainer | $501 to $3,000 a month | Ongoing work and reporting | SEO.com |
| In-house specialist | from about $40,000 a year | A salaried hire | SEO.com |
The same SEO.com guide says most businesses spend $500 to $3,000 a month, with small businesses often around $1,000. Its own text and table disagree slightly on the agency range, which tells you how loosely these numbers are defined. Expect more for crowded niches and for businesses with several locations.
Start with the free part: Google Business Profile
Google says creating a Business Profile is free, and you can manage it from Search and Maps at no charge (Google). You do not need a shop window: service-area businesses such as plumbers can have a profile too, as long as you meet customers in person.
If you do nothing else, do these five things yourself:
- Claim and verify your profile.
- Pick the correct main category, and add secondary ones that fit.
- Add your opening hours, phone number, website, services and a clear description.
- Upload real photos of your work, your place and your team.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review, including bad ones.
Many small businesses can handle these without paying anyone. A paid setup makes sense when you do not have the time, you have several locations, or your profile has been suspended or duplicated. We cover the details in our Google Business Profile service.
What a monthly retainer should include
A published breakdown lists seven ongoing components an agency can handle: Google Business Profile optimisation, citation management, competitor analysis, keyword research, content creation, review management, and reporting (SEO.com). The guide does not say which price covers which. That is your job when comparing quotes.
A reasonable monthly package covers:
- Profile upkeep: posts, photos, answers to questions, correct hours and services.
- Reviews: a simple way for customers to leave one and help with replies.
- Listings (citations): consistent name, address and phone number across directories.
- Local pages: pages on your site for the towns or services you cover.
- Reporting: calls, direction requests, reviews and positions, in plain words.
Ask for the list in writing. If a proposal says "SEO services" and nothing else, you cannot tell what you are paying for.
What drives the price up or down
- Competition. A dentist in a big city fights harder for the map than a locksmith in a small town.
- Number of locations. Each location needs its own profile, page and reviews.
- Your website. If it is slow, thin or missing, that work comes first.
- Reviews. Few reviews means more groundwork.
- Content. New pages and articles cost writing time.
- Reporting depth. Basic monthly summaries cost less than call tracking and custom dashboards.
DIY, freelancer or agency
DIY costs nothing but time and suits one location with low competition. Block two hours a month for photos, posts and reviews.
Freelancer is a good fit if you want the basics done well. Check they work on your type of local market and will show you reports from the same kind of client.
Agency makes sense for multiple locations, tough markets or when you want content and reporting handled in one place. Ask who actually does the work.
Cheap automated packages exist at very low monthly prices. They usually amount to a script that posts generic updates. Look at what they deliver before you sign.
Red flags
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody outside Google controls the map results, and local results change by searcher location. A promise of a number one spot is a sales line, not a service. Good providers promise work and honest numbers.
- Guaranteed "page one" for terms nobody searches. A rank on an obscure keyword does not bring customers.
- A claim of a special relationship with Google.
- No access to your own accounts. You should own your Business Profile, website and analytics. If the provider keeps the logins, you cannot leave.
- Long contracts with no exit. Look for a clear minimum term and notice period.
- No reporting. You need to see calls, direction requests and reviews, not just a ranking screenshot.
- Fake reviews. They break Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
How to choose
- Do the free profile work first, so you know the baseline.
- Ask for a written list of what is included each month.
- Ask what you will see in the report.
- Ask who owns the accounts and what happens if you cancel.
- Compare two or three quotes by what they include, not by price alone.
- Give it time. Local SEO builds over months, which is why many providers use a minimum term.

FAQ
How much does local SEO cost for a small business?
Published agency ranges are about $500 to $3,000 a month, and surveyed micro businesses report $100 to $500. One-off projects run $500 to $5,000. Ours are €249 for the profile setup and from €290 a month for ongoing work.
Can I do local SEO or Google Business Profile myself?
Yes. The profile is free, and claiming it, choosing categories, adding photos and asking for reviews are things most owners can do. Hire help when you lack the time or face tough competition.
Is local SEO worth it for a small business?
It can be if customers search for your service nearby and you can handle the new enquiries. Nobody can guarantee a result, so start with the free steps, track calls and direction requests, and add paid help if the numbers support it.
How long does local SEO take to work?
It usually builds over months rather than days, which is why many providers ask for a minimum term. We use 3 months, then month to month.
What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Local SEO targets map results and "near me" searches for a business serving a specific area. Regular SEO targets searches across a whole country or the web, and tends to cost more. Ours starts at €490 a month for national or ecommerce work.
What should I ask before hiring a local SEO provider?
Ask what is included each month, what the report shows, who owns the accounts, how long the minimum term is and how to cancel. Walk away from anyone guaranteeing rankings.
