If you are searching for "how much does a website cost for a small business", you will find numbers from $0 to $50,000. Most of that range is people selling different things under the same name. This guide separates the options, shows what each one includes, and lists the costs that show up after launch. All market figures are published ranges from guides written by builders and agencies, so they have a commercial interest. Treat them as rough benchmarks and get two or three quotes.
The short answer: price by who builds it
| Option | Typical upfront cost | Typical yearly or monthly cost after | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY with WordPress | $95 to $180 | $60 to $150 a year | WebsiteSetup |
| DIY with a site builder (Wix, Squarespace and similar) | $200 to $800 | $220 to $700 a year | WebsiteSetup |
| Freelancer | $2,000 to $7,600 | Hosting, domain, updates | WebsiteSetup |
| Agency | $5,000 to $15,000 | Often $50 to $200 a month for upkeep | WebsiteSetup, Jim.com |
The freelancer figure comes from an hourly rate of $50 to $95 multiplied by 40 to 80 hours, before theme, hosting, domain and plugin costs. WebsiteSetup last updated its guide in November 2025. Jim.com puts freelancers at $1,500 to $8,000 per project and boutique agencies at $6,000 to $12,000, so the bands overlap. A five-page brochure site is quoted at $1,000 to $4,000 there.
In plain terms: if you have time and a simple need, building it yourself costs a few hundred dollars. If you want someone else to carry the work, expect a few thousand. Agencies with strategy and copywriting teams sit at the top of the range.
What pushes the price up or down
Number of pages. A single page that explains what you do, where you are and how to contact you is a different job from a ten-page site with service pages, a team page and a blog. Every extra page adds design, writing and testing time.
Custom design versus a template. Starting from a template and your logo is faster and cheaper. Fully custom design, with illustration, animation or a unique layout, takes more hours.
Selling online. Adding a store changes the job: product pages, payments, shipping and tax rules, and email flows for orders. If that is you, see our guide to what a Shopify website costs.
Who writes the words and takes the photos. Many quotes assume you supply text and images. Paying for copywriting, product photography or video can add as much as the build itself.
Booking, memberships and integrations. A booking calendar, a customer login or a connection to your accounting tool adds development time.
Languages. Each extra language means writing for that market again, not just translating. It usually adds a fixed amount per language.
Speed. Rush timelines cost more everywhere.
Costs people forget
A website is not paid for once. These costs repeat:
- Domain name: about $12 to $25 a year for a standard .com, and renewal can cost more than the first year (WebsiteSetup).
- Hosting: about $40 to $150 a year for shared hosting, or $60 to $250 for managed WordPress hosting. Site builders bundle hosting into their monthly plans, which run $17 to $120 a month depending on the platform (WebsiteSetup).
- Maintenance and changes: updates, backups, security patches and small edits. Agencies commonly charge a monthly fee for this. If nobody is responsible, the site slowly breaks or goes stale.
- Paid plugins and tools: forms, booking, email sign-up, analytics add-ons.
- Content updates: a site with old opening hours or old prices costs you customers.
Ask any quote one question: "What will I pay in month 13?" The honest answer is the real price of the site.
DIY, freelancer or agency: how to choose
Build it yourself if you have a simple offer, a few free evenings and no urgency. A one-page site on a builder is a reasonable first step for a sole trader. The cost is your time, and the result looks as good as your photos and writing.
Hire a freelancer if you want a custom job and can manage the project yourself. You will need to write a clear brief, give feedback in rounds and check that someone is responsible after launch. A good freelancer is excellent value. A bad one disappears with your login details, so ask who owns the domain and hosting before paying anything.
Hire an agency if you need a team: design, copy, development and strategy under one contract, or you run a larger business with several stakeholders. You pay for coordination as well as the build.
Consider a fixed-price studio if you want agency-level process without agency-level quotes. That is the space we work in. The trade-off is a defined scope: you choose from set packages instead of an open-ended project.
How to compare quotes
- Ask for a list of exactly what is included: pages, rounds of changes, forms, basic SEO, mobile layout.
- Ask what is not included: photos, logo, copywriting, paid plugins, extra pages.
- Ask who owns the domain, hosting account and site files after you pay.
- Ask what the monthly cost is after launch and whether there is a minimum term.
- Ask how long it takes and what happens if you go over the number of change rounds.
- Look at two or three recent sites they built, on your phone, not just on a desktop.
A low price with a long list of exclusions often ends up costing more than a clear price with a longer list of inclusions.

FAQ
How much does a small business website cost per month?
If you use a site builder, plans run about $17 to $120 a month depending on the platform. If you pay a one-off build, the monthly part is hosting and maintenance, which on our side is a care plan from €39 a month.
How much should a small business website cost in 2026?
Budget a few hundred dollars if you build it yourself, $2,000 to $7,600 for a freelancer, and $5,000 to $15,000 for an agency, based on published 2025 and 2026 guides. A fixed-price studio can sit below the agency band when the scope is small and clearly defined.
How much does it cost to maintain a small business website?
Domain and hosting together are often $50 to $175 a year. Add a maintenance plan if you want backups, security updates and small changes handled for you; boutique agency plans run about $50 to $200 a month according to Jim.com, and ours start at €39.
How many pages does a small business website need?
Many small businesses start with one page that covers what you do, where you are and how to get in touch. Move to about five pages (home, services, about, contact and one more) when you have several distinct services to explain.
Is a website still worth it if I only use Instagram or a Google profile?
A website gives you a page you control, where prices, opening hours and contact details stay accurate. Social profiles and map listings send people there to check you out. A Google Business Profile and a simple site work well together.
How long does it take to build a small business website?
A single page can take about a week, and a five-page site about three weeks, if you send your text and photos on time. Our packages show these timelines before you start.
