Alibaba vs 1688
Last updated . Figures are approximate and change with the market, so check current prices before you decide.
Both sites belong to the same wider Alibaba group, but they serve different buyers. Alibaba.com is aimed at international trade. 1688.com is aimed at buyers inside China. Which one you should use depends on your language, your payment options and how much hand-holding you want. If you would rather have someone else handle the Chinese side, our China sourcing agent page explains how we work.

The 1688 rows come from a guide by the payments company WorldFirst, which sells services to 1688 buyers. Treat its price comparison as a general pattern and compare actual quotes. The Alibaba rows come from Alibaba's own Trade Assurance page and seller guidance.
Language
Alibaba.com works in English, and many listings carry English descriptions and specifications. 1688 is primarily in Chinese. WorldFirst's guide says its suppliers often have limited English, and suggests browser translation, a translator or a sourcing agent. Browser translation is fine for browsing. It is risky for specifications, tolerances and contract terms, where a mistranslation becomes a defective batch.
Prices
WorldFirst's comparison lists 1688 as lower priced because buyers deal directly with manufacturers and wholesalers, and Alibaba as often higher because of its global focus. In practice the gap depends on the product, quantity and supplier type. A low 1688 price may not include export packaging, documents or the cost of getting goods out of China, so compare the landed cost, not the ex-factory price. Our guide to how to import from China lists the costs to add.
MOQ
On Alibaba, suppliers set their own minimum order quantity, and Alibaba's seller guidance says it is possible to negotiate it, for example by proposing a quantity close to the minimum or asking to buy a few units to test. On 1688, WorldFirst says MOQs vary by product and low MOQs are available, though some factories require 1,000 or more. Either way, ask the supplier for the MOQ in writing for your exact variant, since a listing can show several.
Payment
On Alibaba, you pay through the platform. Trade Assurance covers orders paid through Alibaba.com, either by online checkout or wire transfer made via the platform. It lists secure payments by card, digital wallet and bank transfer.
On 1688, WorldFirst says you need an Alipay account to verify and activate your 1688 account. It also says payments on 1688 generally require a local Chinese bank account, and that its own World Pay service is an alternative for businesses without one. Requirements for foreign buyers change and differ by account type, so check the current rules, or use an agent who pays the supplier for you.
Do not pay a supplier outside the platform just because they ask. That is also a common scam sign. See how to verify an Alibaba supplier.
Shipping inside China and out
According to WorldFirst's guide, most 1688 suppliers only arrange delivery within China. International buyers typically use a freight forwarder or sourcing agent to collect goods, consolidate them and ship them out. That means you need a Chinese delivery address in practice, and someone to check what arrives before it leaves. Many Alibaba suppliers quote export shipping directly, though terms vary, so confirm the Incoterm in the quote.
Buyer protection
Alibaba's Trade Assurance page says payment is held in escrow and released to the supplier after the product is received and confirmed. It lists refunds if an order is not shipped, goes missing, or arrives defective, wrong or damaged. It applies only to orders paid through Alibaba.com. Read the terms for claim windows and limits before you rely on it, because it is not a verdict on the supplier's quality. Our verification guide explains the limits.
For 1688, the guide we read describes no buyer protection or dispute process for foreign buyers. That does not prove none exists, since 1688 has its own rules in Chinese, but it means you should not assume the same cover. This is also where an agent's checks matter most.
When to use an agent
An agent is worth it when:
- you want 1688 pricing but do not read Chinese or have Alipay;
- you cannot tell factories from trading companies in the listings;
- you want samples checked before you commit;
- you want inspection before the goods ship.
An agent is not worth it if you plan large, regular shipments and can hire a buyer in China, or if your first order is tiny and an Alibaba supplier with Trade Assurance covers it.
Our China sourcing agent service does not take commission from the factory, and you pay the factory directly. The prices on our page are listed below.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Supplier search report | €149, credited against your first order, refunded if fewer than three suppliers qualify |
| Sample coordination | €49 per supplier, plus samples and shipping at cost |
| Order management | 6% of the order with a €150 minimum, and 4% on the part above €30,000 |
| Quality inspection | The inspector's price plus €25, or our own video inspection for €90 |
| Compliance check | €59 for a checklist of CE, REACH and GPSR flags; we flag, we do not certify |
Prices exclude VAT where it applies. Freight is passed on at cost. More detail is on the sourcing agent fees page.
FAQ
Is 1688 cheaper than Alibaba?
Often, according to WorldFirst's comparison, but not always, and the listed price is not the landed cost. Compare the full cost, including packaging, domestic delivery in China, export shipping and fees.
Can I buy from 1688 without speaking Chinese?
You can browse with translation, but speaking to suppliers, checking specifications and handling problems is hard without Chinese. Most foreign buyers use an agent or translator.
Do I need a Chinese address to use 1688?
Most 1688 suppliers deliver only within China, so you need a Chinese address, a freight forwarder or an agent to receive goods and ship them on. Account requirements can differ, so check them.
Is Alibaba safe?
It is a marketplace with many kinds of sellers. Trade Assurance helps for orders paid on the platform, but you still need to check each supplier. Our guide to verifying a supplier gives a checklist.
Which is better for a first order?
Alibaba, for most people, because of English-language listings and Trade Assurance. Move to 1688 later, with an agent, if you want to lower unit costs.
Is this legal or customs advice?
No. It is general information. Import rules depend on your country and product, so check your customs authority's guidance.
How OnePDA can help
We search for real factories, order and check samples, follow production and arrange inspection. Most buyers start with the €149 supplier search report. We charge no factory commission, and you pay the factory directly. We cannot promise a price or a quality outcome, and an agent is not right for every order. See the China sourcing agent page or ask for a quote.
